Falla made no secret of his attachment to the purest and most authentic sources of traditional Spanish music. Nowhere more than in the Siete Canciones did he penetrate into the depths of the Spanish soul. Though Falla used the piano in the original version of these songs, many aspects of his piano writing reveal the influence of the guitar, not only in the particular layout of the harmonic writing, but also in the vehemently arpeggiated chords in the spirit of rasgueado and in the repeated notes in the punteado style of “Polo”. Miguel Llobet (1878-1938) made this arrangement for guitar during Falla’s lifetime. The originality of this transcription lies in its practical approach, offering the guitarist, on a second staff, alternative, easier solutions for certain passages. Emilio Pujol oversaw the publication of this version in 1957. United for the first time in a single album, with numerous rectifications and corrections of omissions and errors in the first edition, here are the seven hitherto separately published songs, in Emilio Pujol’s famous collection of guitar works.
