Dvorák had already written solo music for Hanus Wihan, future dedicatee of his cello concerto, before planning with him and the violinist Ferdinand Lachner a trio tour planned for 1892. In this perspective, needing new works for cello and piano, he reworked "Le Calme de la forêt" in a version for cello and piano during the Christmas period 1891. Originally composed for piano with four hands, this singing piece from the cycle "De la forêt de Bohème" became a piece by very popular concert thanks to the sounds of the cello. Subsequently, Dvorák produced a new arrangement of "Calme de la forêt", transforming it into a brilliant concert piece for cello and orchestra. For the urtext edition for cello and piano presented here, the editor and specialist of Dvorák Milan Pospí_il mainly relied on the first edition of 1894.
