Edvard Grieg's Third Violin Sonata is one of his major compositions and, for this musical form, is one of the most important works of the last quarter of the 19th century, along with the sonatas by Johannes Brahms and César Frank. The reputation it enjoys is manifested among other things in the fact that Thomas Mann evokes it in his novel "Doctor Faustus". Since its composition, the Sonata op. 45 de Grieg has always enjoyed great popularity and it was therefore high time that Henle devoted an edition to it.
