"Magisterial and teeming with new ideas": this is how the secretary of legation Silverstolpe qualifies these quartets when he heard them in 1797 for the first time. And Charles Burney, music historian and friend of Haydn, recounts in 1799: "Never has instrumental music given me so much pleasure ...". The new edition of these six works, including the famous quartet "the Emperor", follows the text of the complete edition published by the Joseph Haydn-Institut in Cologne. The edition of the parts (HN 214) as well as the score (HN 9214) provide detailed information on sources and variants. Leaflets in the parts allow an optimal page change.
