Originally intended for the final clarinet examination of the Conservatoire de musique de Paris, the "Première Rhapsodie" soon became a hit piece of the clarinet repertoire - it is a highly impressive work in which the composer handles in an astonishing way the sound possibilities of the instrument. The success is so brilliant that Debussy will later transcribe orchestral piano accompaniment - and in this form, the "Rhapsody" is played today in concert halls around the world. And besides, "icing on the cake", our edition also offers the charming "Little Room", this short piece not even reaching 40 measures, full of originality, originally conceived actually for the reading test at view of the final exam.
