Stimulated by the sensational success of "The Creation", van Swieten, author of the text and the order, urges the composer to start another great oratorio. Haydn is at first unenthusiastic about the text submitted to him, describing the changes in nature during the year as well as the worries and joys of peasant life. After the creation, Haydn speaks with pride about his work. During the genesis, he had repeatedly made changes and reworkings of different parts. Our Studien-Edition (pocket score), which is based on the analyzed text of the musicological research and contained in Haydn's "Haydn-Gesamtausgabe" (published in 2007), reproduces in appendix the first major versions and sketches.
