Schubert only needed ten days to write down his string quartet in G major, one of his chamber music works, so to speak. With its literally symphonic dimensions, this last quartet recalls its large String Quintet in C major. And indeed, Schubert wanted, as a passage from one of his letters reveals, "to clear the way for the great symphony" with this work of chamber music and a few others dating from the same period. The composer will no longer experience the public performance of the Quartet written in 1826 - also going to press long after his death. The Urtext edition, accompanied by a “Studien-Edition”, is thus based on the autograph transmitted.
