Elegy for cello and piano, op. 24

After the success of his first sonata for violin (HN 980), it was obvious that Fauré had to continue with the composition of works for chamber music. In 1880 he composed a small piece for cello and piano which was supposed to become the slow movement of a sonata. Fauré abandoned his project of sonata and instead published the play under the title "Elegie". He was so successful that Fauré's publisher encouraged him to write new plays, and conductor Édouard Colonne commissioned him for the orchestral version of "Elegie", created two years later. As is the custom, our Urtext edition features a cello part with or without indications.
