As a pianist and composer, Saint-Saëns was naturally confronted early on with the genre of the piano concerto. He clearly refused the type of "brilliant concerto", then predominant in France: "The concerto solo is a role which must be conceived and rendered as a dramatic character". Composed in 1868, his second piano concerto perfectly illustrates this concept of the "symphonic concerto". The soloist part is technically very difficult while being closely linked to the orchestral paste. The piano reduction is by Johannes Umbreit. It is based on the version for two pianos produced by the composer himself. The soloist's fingering is by Pascal Rogé.
