Chopin's four scherzos, in which the composer has given a completely new content to a traditional genre, represent a summit of the romantic piano. They adopt a wild and demonic tone - any joke (in the sense of scherzo) is almost absent here. So much so that Robert Schumann wondered about the Premier Scherzo "how serious should be dressed if the joke already wears dark veils". Following the publication of a revised edition of each of the four scherzos, Henle now offers the whole in a paperback or bound volume in an edition taking into account the most recent research.
