The sonata in A minor op. post. 164 by Franz Schubert presented here in the urtext edition is one of the early sonatas written between 1815 and 1819 in which the young composer still sometimes struggled with form. However, the sonata in A minor composed in March 1817 is already wonderfully successful. This tone does not yet have the tragic and fatalistic resonance found in the two other later sonatas in A minor by Schubert. No doubt this is also due to the fact that he takes every opportunity here to illuminate the tone by attracting it to the major mode or by escaping into more pleasant neighboring harmonic regions.
