If, in the past, the term "Ballad" was used only in literature and for vocal music, it was introduced in 1836 by Chopin in piano music, with the publication of his Ballad op. 23. And indeed, the four Ballads of Chopin all have the character of a dramatic story: the musical thread runs from beginning to end according to an increasing tension to reach a grandiose climax. After the "Preludes", we have also submitted this edition to an in-depth revision according to the current state of musicological research relating to Chopin's work. The printed critical device brings together the main research data.
