Entitled by Beethoven "Sonata quasi una fantasia", this composition is however known to music lovers under the name of "Moonlight Sonata" - a nickname which already circulated in Beethoven's time. "The lake rests under the twilight reflections of the moon, the wave crashing dully on the dark shore", this is what Ludwig Rellstab wrote about the 1st movement in 1823. Wilhelm von Lenz adds: "It's like if, in the middle of a dreary plain, a colossal tomb could be seen, lit by a pale moonlight ”. Drawing on the latest musicological research, the explanatory texts by Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch show that Beethoven was perhaps inspired by the sounds of the Aole harp. Perahia is also the author of the fingerings.
