In his collections of Impromptus and Musical Moments, Franz Schubert brilliantly demonstrates at the end of his life how the lyrical and singing form of the lied can be transposed to the piano. His famous Impromptus op. 90 for example, have in their simplicity the evidence of fully accomplished works of art and are among the most popular works of romantic piano music. The third number of opus 90, an andante in solb major, is a mysterious reverie to interpret pianissimo. A serene melody hovers above the murmur of an accompaniment of eighth triplets on harmonies evolving with delicacy. This separate edition in urtext quality offers the work in its original tone. Indeed, in other editions, this impromptu is often transposed to G major for convenience, causing it to lose its muted color.
