"With humor", "slowly and delicately", "very lively" ..., the sound universe of Fantasiestücke op. 12 is already revealed through the execution indications: a kaleidoscope of ideas and musical atmospheres. Our new edition, revised and corrected, presents not only the eight pieces but also, in the appendix, a ninth piece chosen by Schumann for the final drafting. Robena Ann Laidlaw, the dedicatee of the work, performed in public, as well as other friends of the composer, some of the Fantasiestücke even before going to press. The work will experience rapid dissemination. Schumann received the greatest compliment from Franz Liszt, who wrote to him full of enthusiasm: “… the Fantasiestücke interested me a lot. I certainly play them with pleasure. And God knows I can't say the same for many other things. ”
