Each of Bach's six Partitas includes seven absolutely brilliant movements, most of the time arranged in the following way: Präludium - German - Courante - Sarabande - [two dances of character] - Gigue. These partitas of non-plus-ultra can rightly be described as cycles of sequences composed by Bach. This cycle far exceeds the artistic and technical ambitions of its sister English Suites (HN100) and French (HN71) yet played equally. It is not a coincidence that Bach exceptionally had it published (1731), giving him also the opus number "1".
