Around 1900, Debussy composed, as stage music for the Songs of Bilitis (transcriptions of ancient Greek poems by courtesan Bilitis), by Pierre Louÿs, twelve short pieces for two flutes, two harps and celesta. Although the work was performed, it was not published during Debussy's lifetime. Debussy had great esteem for this composition and took it up again in 1914, choosing six of the old pieces to create a new important cycle for piano four hands. He also completed a version for two-handed piano (HN 402). In each of the two versions, Debussy succeeds in making this delicate stage music very colorful and refined piano music.
