The “Small lyric pieces”, as they are called in the first editions, are among the most popular works by Grieg. The latter was only 24 years old when these wonderful miniatures of relatively easy access appeared which accompanied many student pianists on the way of classical music. In 1867, Grieg had certainly not dared to imagine that this first publication would be followed by nine other notebooks of "Pièces lyriques". And yet it was not until 1901, with the tenth notebook, that he definitively ended this series.
