Grieg and his publisher did not take the same view of the extraordinary popularity of the first two notebooks of "Pièces lyriques" op. 12 and 38. While Grieg, in order to counteract the effect of mass production, would gladly have titled this third notebook "Spring songs", the publisher defended the idea of retaining the "brand" "Lyric pieces" and obtained successful. The continuing great success of these works was never denied - twenty years later, the publishing house still proudly wrote to Grieg that among its "Lyric pieces", opus 12 and opus 43 were those which sold the more, and that they left "like hotcakes".
