Romance for a melodic instrument and piano was a popular genre in 19th century French salon music. Saint-Saëns, too, wrote several pieces of this kind for violin, cello and horn. His only Romance for flute was born in 1871, shortly after the founding of the National Music Society. It was in this new forum of piano music and chamber music that it was created, a year later. Despite its brevity, this piece conceals many harmonic and melodic subtleties, which quickly made it popular with flautists - both in its original version with piano and in its later version for orchestra. Henle's urtext edition is the first critical edition of this work, which is also very popular in the educational repertoire.
