As can be deduced from their opus numbers, the five string trios are relatively early works. Beethoven had opus 3 printed at the beginning of 1796 and began to write the serenade op. 8 in the same year, soon followed by the three trios op. 9. Subsequently, Beethoven abandoned this genre and never returned to it. These five pieces are pure Beethoven and continue to be played regularly. In the same volume appears the piece designated in the autograph manuscript as a "duo with two glasses required" that Beethoven obviously intended for two friends suffering from myopia.
