Decca Classics commemorates the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy through a new best-of anthology honoring French performers: Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Pierre Boulez, Philippe Cassard, Jacques Crespin, Jacques Février, Maurice Gendron, Hélène Grimaud , Katia and Marielle Labèque, Pierre Monteux, Pascal Rogé, Manuel Rosenthal, Gérard Souzay, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and many others.
In terms of Debussy's interpretation, to speak of a real French school would be reductive. In this album, only one of these artists knew Debussy well and brings a direct testimony: Pierre Monteux, who was the assistant of André Messager during the creation of Pelléas et Mélisande, and the creator of Games in 1913. Others were children or adolescents at the death of Debussy: Jean Fournet, Manuel Rosenthal and Jacques Février, the latter two being also relatives of Maurice Ravel. All the others have in common a form of interpretative tradition inherited from the teaching they received from professors whose names are Pierre Barbizet, Lucette Descaves, Yvonne Loriod, Claire Croiza, Lazare Levy or Robert Casadesus. This tradition can be summed up simply: no great effusions, it is rather in search of the color that must be attached. Debussy's music, like Ravel's, is sensitive but never extroverted. Their style to all could be summed up in three words: clarity, modesty and sensitivity. Did not Debussy himself say: "The French spirit is something like fantasy in sensibility"?
