Bourdieu and music: challenges and prospects

Pierre Bourdieu's scientific report to music - both enthusiastic and hesitant - and the limited treatment he reserved for this object - in comparison, in particular, to literature and painting - are all invitations to s '' seize the tools forged by this author in order to intensify the investigations on the musical field, therefore to pursue a work remained largely open. Are these tools adapted to the specificities of the musical field? Can we link them to musicological knowledge, to music history work or to musical analysis? Do the peculiarities of the material supports or of the symbolic form proper to the musical sphere call for theoretical adjustments or amendments?

The texts gathered in this volume have no other ambition than to question the relevance of the conceptual apparatus developed by Pierre Bourdieu with regard to the analysis of musical and musical practices - creation, performance, music criticism, listening , etc. - and are distributed according to three axes of reflection: the analysis of symbolic production - the theory of cultural legitimacy and the construction of musical tastes - musical socialization.
